EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS

Various industries have set up agencies to deal with the problems caused by the AIDS epidemic. The entertainment industry's most active and vital foundation addressing the challenges of AIDS is Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, 165 West 46th Street, New York, NY 10036, phone: (212) 840-0770.

BC/EFA raises funds with a wide variety of activities including benefit performances, special events, auctions of theater memorabilia, and contests. Since October 1987, it has raised and distributed more than $6 million in the fight against AIDS and has helped others raise tens of millions more by recruiting and making available to other AIDS service groups the talents of theater professionals from every craft and discipline, including performers. A national organization, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS serves people with AIDS across the United States, to date having distributed funds in response to more than 4,000 requests for personal financial help and as grants to more than 300 AIDS service organizations.

A conspicuous activity is The Ribbon Project, originated by Visual Aids, the artists' collective, and promoted by BC/EFA. They urge everyone to show compassion for all people with AIDS and support of AIDS service organizations by wearing a red ribbon, a symbol of hope and a reminder that after 10 years the fight against AIDS still goes on. The Ribbon Project began at the Tony Awards in June 1991, and red ribbons have been worn at many events since then, including the Democratic National Convention in 1992. Eclipse Enterprises is donating 15% of the profits from AIDS AWARENESS TRADING CARDS to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Next Card 108: GMHC/APLA/SFAF: AIDS Service Organizations
